Faith communities in the Piscataqua region, inspired by their teachings and moved by the growing evidence of human impacts on the planet, are asking: What could we do better together? Representatives of many faith communities are meeting monthly on third Tuesdays to share their experiences and questions and find ways to increase sustainable choices in their communities. We aren't posting all faith-based environment/sustainability activities in our region on this webpage, but you can be put on an email list to get event information sent to you, and you can send your faith-based calendar information to for forwarding to the email list. In this program, participants will study excerpts from the Writings of the Bah‡'’ Faith and other religions to gain an understanding of the spiritual solution to the global problem of climate change, with an emphasis on the actions individuals and communities can take to help mitigate the problem." Sat. Nov. 6, 5:00 Ð 8:00 pm Ð The South Church Green Sanctuary Team and Slow Food Seacoast are hosting the 50 Ð Mile Thanksgiving on Sat. Nov 6 from 5:00 Ð 8:00 pm in the South Church Fellowship Hall. This is a delicious and bountiful pot luck. Pot luck dishes are to contain at least one ingredient from within 50 miles of where you live. Heirloom turkeys will be provided. Special guest, Lynne Christy Anderson, will talk about her book, "Breaking Bread:Recipes from Immigran Kitchens". There is a suggested donation of $10. Volunteers are needed to help with decorations, set-up, serving, and clean-up. 2010 Series of Sustainability Services at Seacoast Churches and Synagogues
The members of the Interfaith Sustainability Team(IST) have agreed to have sustainability services at their respective faith communities as a way for members of IST to learn about other faith services and to familiarize congregations with IST. The services and other events are open to the public.
Friday March 19 - 7:30 pm - Spring Equinox Sustainability Service at Temple Israel in Portsmouth, 200 State St. IST members will speak on the sustainable practices that their faith communities are doing. There will be a panel with a discussion dialog with the congregation. Information: Rabbi Barry Krieger, barrykrieger@gmail.com.

Sat. Nov. 14, 2009 5:00 pm Ð 50-Mile Thanksgiving - This year, Slow Food Seacoast's popular Thanksgiving event comes closer to home. The "100-Mile Thanksgiving" of past years is being updated to reflect our community's progress in finding and developing more of our own local food resources. In recognition of these positive changes, this year's Thanksgiving celebration of regional foods is titled "50-Mile Thanksgiving: Closer to Home." The event takes place at South Church, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Portsmouth at 292 State St., and is co-sponsored by Slow Food Seacoast and the Church's Green Sanctuary Team, with support from RiverRun Bookstore. This year the event takes an exciting new format, featuring a 7:00 PM talk on urban farming by Novella Carpenter, author of the book "Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer." $10 donation for adults, children under 12 free for supper and book talk, food donation for book talk only.
