PORTSMOUTH — As he chatted with experts from a cross section of countries attending the International Eco-municipality Conference in Sweden last month, city resident Bert Cohen asked those assembled at the table whether they thought the international community had less than 10 years to seriously address global warming.

PORTSMOUTH — Hundreds of people crowded Parrott Avenue Saturday for the city's inaugural Sustainability Fair, featuring speakers, exhibits, events and retailers with a common theme of going green.

The idea for the fair came out of the Portsmouth Listens study circles on sustainability as a way to raise awareness, celebrate the city's efforts toward a more sustainable city and to show people how to live in a sustainable manner.

Sustainability fair draws thousands  pdf

PORTSMOUTH — More than 2,000 people attended the first sustainability festival in the city Saturday afternoon, bolstering the community's claim to being an "eco-municipality."

More than 90 booths at the event, held at Portsmouth Middle School, showcased green businesses and environmental education displays. Organic food vendors set up outside.

Portsmouth residents take up 'green' city topics

PORTSMOUTH — About 50 people gathered in the Portsmouth Public Library's Levenson Room Saturday morning to mark ongoing sustainability efforts and the City Council's recent resolution to declare the city an eco-municipality.

A meeting of the sustainability-driven minds

PORTSMOUTH — Preserving open space. Lowering carbon emissions. Expanding local recycling programs.

These sustainability issues — among others — have been discussed at great length in various Seacoast communities in recent years. Dozens of meetings have been held, plans drafted and PowerPoint presentations developed. Now the Piscataqua Sustainability Initiative is working to take all that talk and turn it into action.

Marchand passes eco-torch to incoming Mayor

PORTSMOUTH — In an effort to celebrate the city's attempt at becoming more environmentally friendly, members of the Blue Ribbon Committee on Sustainable Practices along with Mayor Steve Marchand gathered on Dec. 27 to pass the torch along to Mayor Elect Thomas Ferrini.

Cohen: Sustainability of the planet starts locally

PORTSMOUTH — A symposium on sustainability on the Seacoast was held Saturday morning at the Portsmouth Public Library featuring a Power Point presentation and speakers from a variety of backgrounds. Bert Cohen, co-founder of Piscataqua Sustainability Initiative and collaborator in Portsmouth Listens study circles, facilitated the event along with longtime environmental activist Sky Maher.
